Using the Test Manager

What it is.

The Test Manager feature allows an instructor to create, build, and organize surveys and exams. Exam results can be graded and recorded automatically in the online Gradebook in Blackboard.

Implications for Teaching and Learning.

The Test Manager requires quite a bit of front-end work, however this effort can be a great time-management feature in terms of grading and posting grades of assesments.

Setting it Up.

Note: It may be more efficient to create your questions in the Pool Manager first and then add the test in the Content Area sections (Course Information, Course Documents, and Assignments).

From the Control Panel, click on the Test Manager link in the Assessment section.

Click on the Add Test icon.

Type the name of the pool in the Name field, the description in the Description field, and the instructions in the Instructions field.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Submit button.

Choose a question type from the Add Question pull down list.

Click on the Go button.

Note: If you select Random Block you will need to pull your questions from a pool. For more information on question pools see Pool Manager.

Follow the instructions for the specific question type (below).

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Save button.

Please go to the Question Types page for specific instructions on adding various types of questions to quizzes.

Please note that there is a check box under Point Value labeled "Extra Credit Only."

Any question created with Extra credit only enabled will add points to the score if the question is answered correctly and will take no points away from the total score if the question is answered incorrectly.

This new functionality makes it relatively easy for instructors to set questions as extra credit only. Many instructors use extra credit for certain assignments or activities but it has been difficult in previous versions of Blackboard to build these questions into assessments housed within Blackboard. Now, with the click on one button, instructors can set certain questions as extra credit only.
