Performance Dashboard
What it is.
The performance dashboard is a tool which gives instructors access to student information in one central place. It can be accessed from the Control Panel (Evaluation submenu).
Implications for Teaching and Learning.
The performance dashboard allows instructors to access a certain amount of student participation information. It is a good location to get information on student access to the course, to check if students have reviewed material (if you used the Review feature), and to see detailed information on the discussion board (average, minimum, and maximum post lengths) in a central location. This is a useful feature if you have concerns about the frequency of access for certain students or if you have length requirements for the discussion board. The biggest advantage to this feature is that all students in the course can be accessed for review rather than checking data on an individual basis.
Using Performance Dashboard.
The information on the performance dashboard can be sorted by any of the data columns by clicking on the white triangle above the column heading. In addition to showing the students' Last Names, First Names, Usernames, and Roles, the following functionality is available:
- Last Course Access: This column shows the date that the student last accessed the course.
- Days Since Last Course Access: This column gives a quick view of how many days have passed since the student last accessed the course.
- Review Status: This column shows the number of items marked as reviewed by each student.
- Adaptive Release: This column links to any Adaptive Release information in the course and displays what course information and areas are currently available to the student.
- Discussion Board: This column lists the number of discussion posts by each student. Important: We have noticed inaccuracies in the post counts presented through the performance dashboard, so this should really just be used as a starting point for assessing posting information for the students.
- Early Warning System: If you are using the Early Warning System in your course, this column will show what rules the student has met.
- View Grades: This allows you to go to each student's grade list, which is the same gradebook user information from the gradebook.
The columns Review Status, Adaptive Release, Discussion Board, Early Warning System, and View Grades all contain interactive tools that you can use by clicking on the information for each student under these columns.
Review Status
Clicking on the information displayed in this column will bring up the Review Status screen for the student:
The left column identifies the area within the course where the Mark Reviewed button has been placed. The visibility column shows either that the student can see the area (an open eye) or that the student cannot see the area (a closed eye). And, the Review Status column shows whether the student has marked that area as reviewed or not.
Please note: The Review Status function will only work if there are areas of the course in which the Mark Reviewed button has been deployed. The Mark Reviewed button is just one of the various options available through the Adaptive Release tools.
Adaptive Release
Clicking on the round icon in this column will open a course map showing what areas of the course the student has access to:
The key at the top of the map shows how to determine which items the student has or has not reviewed, and which items are or are not visible to the student.
Please note: If you are not using Adaptive Release tools in your course, you will not see some of the icons.
Discussion Board
Clicking on the number of posts shown for the student in this column will bring up a Discussion Board screen for that individual student:
This screen will give information for each forum that the student has posted in. Information given is: the forum that the student posted to with a link to that forum, the total posts made to that forum by the student, the date of the last post to the forum, the average length of words in the posts, the minimum length of words in the posts, the maximum number of words in the posts, the average position in the forum in which the student posted (1st = 1, 2nd =2, etc.), and the grade (if there was one) for the student's post/s.
Clicking on the number listed under the Total Posts column will collect the students posts for that forum and allows you to view them:
Clicking on a grade for the posts will take you to the grades in the gradebook for that student.
Early Warning System
The Early Warning System column shows a ratio of the rules that a student has met. For example: 0/2 means that a student has not met any of the 2 rules that are set up for the course. Clicking on the ratio numbers will bring up the Review User Status screen from the Early Warning System for that student:
The information shown is what rules are available, the name of those rules, the type of rule, whether or not the student has met the criteria for that rule, a detailed status of the rule criteria and the student's activity in comparison, and the last notification date for the student (if the student was notified). It is also possible to choose to notify the student from this screen.
Please note: There will only be Early Warning System information available if the Early Warning Rules have been set up for the course. For more information see Early Warning System
View Grades
Clicking on the icon in this column will give you the option to open the student's grades in the gradebook:
You can view the: a list of grades for the student through User Grade List, statistics for the user through User Detail, or the contact information for the student through User Information.
