Using the Course Calendar

Why?

  • The Course Calendar is one way to remind students about due dates for assignments and examinations while reinforcing the course schedule.
  • The Course Calendar can be printed on a screen-by-screen basis or viewed within the course.
  • The Course Calendar provides a familiar context for students to understand the flow of the course.

Implications for Teaching and Learning.

  • There are multiple calendar options in Blackboard. Each student has a personal calendar and each course has a course calendar. The Course Calendar is used by instructors to post information about key course events. Students have the option of adding events to their personal calendar only. These are seen by the student and not seen by any other users.

    • Students taking multiple distance education courses with instructors using the Course Calendar feature will see key events from all courses on their personal calendar.
  • Key decisions include the date selected by the instructor and the start and end times of the Calendar item. Many instructors provide explanation and details in the Description Area. These become visible when students click the event in their calendar.
  • The calendar provides additional documentation that students were informed of important dates and events.

Promising Practices for TWU.

  • We encourage instructors to inform and teach students about the My Calendar module.
  • Clear written explanation of the purpose and use of the Course Calendar early in the course is recommended.
  • We encourage you to inform students about the My Calendar module available on each student’s Blackboard page. This is one additional way to push information to students.

How?

  • Go to Control Panel / Course Tools / Course Calendar
  • Select the View (View Day, View Week, View Month, View Year)
  • Select Add Event
  • Enter the Event Name and Description
  • Set the Date and Start Time and End Time
