Allow Multiple Attempts

What Is It?

Instructors are able to allow two different types of multiple attempts for an exam. Instructors can allow multiple attempts or specific a number of attempts.

Implications for Teaching and Learning.

Assessment can serve as a summative function or as a formative function. Allowing multiple attempts (either unlimited or for a specific number of times) may help students learn from their mistakes on the examination. Formative assessment serves to inform students about what they know well and what they do not know. Allowing multiple attempts is one way to use examinations as both a teaching tool and an assessment tool.

How do I set it up?

First, instructors must get to the Test Options screen. After you deploy a test, you should to see the Modify Test screen. The first is to Modify the Test and the second is the Modify the Test Options screen. Select the Modify the Test Options.

In section 2 (Test Availability) you will find the option to allow Multiple Attempts. There are two radio buttons that allow you to select unlimited attempts or to specify the number of attempts.

The gradebook ties in with this feature by allowing you to choose which of the multiple attempts you would like to have graded in the Modify Gradebook Item screen.
